URGENT UPDATE: The Veneto Club in Melbourne’s north-east is gearing up for its inaugural salami festa, running from August 30 to 31. This two-day event will not only be a celebration of Italian culture but also a fierce competition among local salami makers, with $500 prizes for the best and most innovative salamis.
Joe Morello, executive manager of the Veneto Club, reveals that many entrants are keeping their recipes under wraps, echoing the secrecy of culinary legends. “People don’t like to give away their secrets. It’s a bit like the Colonel’s 11 secret herbs and spices,” Morello stated. The competitive spirit is palpable as participants vie for the coveted bragging rights of having the best salami in the region.
As the festival approaches, general manager Kon Monos emphasizes the importance of this event in revitalizing the club’s presence in the community following several challenging years. Founded in 1967 by immigrants, the club has faced difficulties, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, but has managed to adapt by offering takeaway and online deli products.
The salami festa will feature a variety of food stalls, including pizza, cheeses, and cannoli, along with live entertainment from the Veneto Club choir and regional Italian music bands. Entry to the event is $15, while children under 12 can attend for free.
Participants in the homemade salami competition must submit their entries by close of business on August 29. Judging will occur on August 31 at noon, with expert judges like 3AW journalist Tony Tardio and City of Manningham Mayor Deirdre Diamante. Winners will be announced at 3 PM the same day, making this a must-see event for food lovers and community members alike.
With a rich history and a vibrant community, the Veneto Club’s salami festa is poised to become an annual highlight, showcasing the culinary talents of local home cooks while fostering a sense of camaraderie and celebration. Don’t miss out on this flavorful showdown!
