UPDATE: In an electrifying showdown, the Dubbo CYMS have triumphed over the Mudgee Dragons with a 16-12 victory in a fiercely contested qualifying final at Apex Oval on August 17, 2025. The win marks a significant turning point for the CYMS, who faced the daunting challenge of overcoming a 12-point deficit early in the match.
The Dragons, led by player-coach Clay Priest, struck first, with Priest crashing over for the opening try just eight minutes into the game. Mudgee extended their lead to 12-0 following a try from winger Steven Marsters, both converted by Bailey Hardwick. Tensions flared as physical confrontations erupted and penalties piled up, highlighting the high stakes of the match.
“It was always going to be a pretty aggressive game,” said CYMS star Jeremy Thurston after the match. “Both teams have been some of the better teams in the comp the last few years, and both were really pressured into getting a result on the day.”
Facing a tough uphill battle, the Fishies recalibrated their strategy. Thrust into action, Jarryn Powyer and Jack Quinn scored crucial tries around half-time, leveling the game and setting the stage for a nail-biting finish.
As the match approached its climax, a penalty put the CYMS right on Mudgee’s try line. In a pivotal moment, Seaun Stanley stood strong in a tackle and offloaded to Chapman, who scored in the corner. “That was an absolutely massive moment,” Chapman stated, highlighting the teamwork that led to his score. “The boys had to really dig deep and fight back from 12-0 in the first half.”
The victory is particularly sweet for CYMS, who have struggled against Mudgee in previous encounters, including a significant 68-6 defeat. This win not only boosts their confidence but also keeps their hopes alive for a home grand final.
“This is such a special win for us… amazing,” Chapman added, reflecting on the emotional significance of the match. The CYMS now have an extra week to rest and prepare, an advantage that could prove crucial as they pursue championship glory.
However, the Dragons were left to process their disappointment, especially regarding officiating decisions that favored the Fishies. Captain Tom Lawson urged his team to rally, stating, “It’s simple, boys, we win from here on out.”
The home crowd’s energy played a vital role in both the CYMS and Dubbo’s under-18s side, who also secured a victory against Forbes, enhancing the club’s morale.
As the championship race heats up, all eyes will be on the CYMS as they prepare for their next challenge, aiming to capitalize on this momentum and secure a spot in the finals.
Stay tuned for further updates as the playoffs unfold, and follow the journey of the Dubbo CYMS in their quest for glory.
