URGENT UPDATE: Millions of Australian households are facing a dire choice between heating their homes and putting food on the table. A shocking new survey from comparison website Finder reveals that 8.8 million Australians are struggling to afford essential heating, as the cost of living crisis continues to escalate.

The survey, conducted with over 1,000 respondents, highlights that 13% of Australians are forced to go cold “all the time” due to soaring winter energy bills, while an additional 28% avoid using heating whenever possible. With average quarterly energy bills increasing by 13% in just three years, the urgency of this crisis is palpable.

Finder’s energy expert, Mariam Gabaji, emphasized the emotional toll of this situation, stating it is “heartbreaking” that families are sacrificing their comfort and health to avoid overwhelming energy costs. “We’ve seen polar blasts already this winter, with certain regions experiencing subzero temperatures,” she remarked. “Going cold all winter isn’t just uncomfortable; it can be dangerous, especially for the elderly and young children.”

The survey also identified electricity as one of the most stressful expenses for Australian households. More than 20% of respondents ranked energy bills among their top three financial stressors, following groceries and housing costs. This stark reality comes as electricity and gas prices have consistently outpaced inflation since 2000.

The findings reveal that while less than 20% of individuals blame energy providers for their escalating costs, the majority attribute their financial struggles to the broader cost of living crisis. Some 18% of respondents even pointed fingers at their own habits, such as prolonged showers and leaving lights on.

Despite just 54% of electricity customers believing their plans offer good value, only 16% have switched their energy providers in the first half of 2024. Gabaji warned, “Energy retailers are banking on people staying loyal or feeling overwhelmed. A quick comparison could mean the difference between shivering and saving this winter,” underscoring the potential savings of between $500 and $700 annually by switching plans.

To combat these rising costs, Finder is urging households to consider energy-efficient heating options like electric blankets or ceramic heaters. Additionally, they recommend checking for available government rebates that can help upgrade to more efficient appliances.

As Australians brace for a challenging winter, the urgency of addressing these issues cannot be overstated. Families need immediate solutions to navigate this troubling landscape and ensure their health and safety during the cold months ahead.
