UPDATE: Coaches are buzzing as Kiewa-Sandy Creek star Connor Newnham is projected to challenge history and potentially win the coveted Barton Medal on Monday night. Traditionally dominated by midfielders, this year’s race is heating up, with Newnham’s exceptional performance positioning him as a frontrunner for the league’s highest individual honor.
In a recent poll conducted by The Border Mail, six out of eleven coaches believe Newnham will either claim the medal or secure a runner-up spot. This unprecedented support highlights his stellar season, in which he netted 98 goals, just shy of the century mark, marking the most productive year of his career.
Newnham, under the guidance of coach Zac Fulford, has thrived, winning the Hawks’ best and fairest last year and looking to repeat that success. With a remarkable scoring record, he has been hailed as possibly the best player in the TDFL this season.
Historically, forwards face an uphill battle for the Barton Medal, with a legacy filled with midfielders and rucks. Last season, Newnham finished equal third with 15 votes, trailing behind co-winners Cam Fendyk, Zack Leitch, and Jarrad Farwell, who all polled 22 votes. This year, Newnham’s performance has surpassed last season’s tally of 56 goals, making a compelling case for his victory.
If Newnham doesn’t secure the medal, the coaches predict Dylan Van Berlo, co-coach of Rutherglen, as a strong contender. Van Berlo was last year’s pre-count favorite, also finishing with 15 votes. His teammate Marty Brennan is another key player, having consistently shone throughout the season, and is expected to attract the umpires’ favorable attention.
Meanwhile, Tyson Neander of Thurgoona is also in contention, having polled 18 votes last year but was ineligible for the award due to a suspension. Although the Bulldogs have had a tougher season, Neander remains a strong candidate for the medal.
Coaches are also eyeing other potential high-pollers, including Elliott Powell, Ben Mason, Cam Fendyk, and Jarrad Farwell. The anticipation is building as the count approaches, with numerous rising stars like Linc Hardy of Thurgoona expected to surprise.
As the Barton Medal count looms, all eyes will be on Connor Newnham and his competitors as they vie for football’s most prestigious individual accolade. Fans and supporters are reminded to tune in as the excitement unfolds this Monday night.
