URGENT UPDATE: A wedding celebration turned tragic in the Hunter Valley as a mini-bus crash has left multiple people injured. The accident occurred near Cessnock around 10:30 AM on July 30, 2023, when the Toyota HiAce, carrying five members of the groom’s party, veered off the road and rolled down a 40-meter embankment.

Among the injured is groom John Barrett, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease earlier this year and was in a wheelchair at the time. He has been airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. Four others, including the driver, also sustained injuries and were transported to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.

Authorities have confirmed that the mini-bus driver, a 73-year-old man, has been issued a negligent driving infringement notice. The Hunter Valley Police District commander, Superintendent Steve Laksa, described the incident as a “tragic situation,” noting that the group had not yet arrived at the wedding venue.

“They hadn’t actually got to the wedding yet, so they still had a wedding in front of them, but we’re very fortunate that the injuries weren’t fatal,” Laksa stated. “Two of the persons involved are in a critical condition, but they are receiving the appropriate treatment and care now. It definitely could have been worse.”

This developing story highlights the urgency of road safety, especially during significant life events like weddings. As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with further information about the incident to come forward.
