7-2-million-illicit-tobacco-seized-two-arrested-in-major-bust

URGENT UPDATE: In a significant crackdown on organized crime, authorities have seized over $7.2 million worth of illicit tobacco, luxury watches, and cash, leading to the arrest of two men. The operation unfolded on August 21, 2023, as detectives from Victoria Police’s Criminal Proceeds Squad and Taskforce Lunar, with the support of the Australian Border Force, executed search warrants at multiple locations in Dallas and Campbellfield, along with a business address in Epping.

A 40-year-old man from Dallas was apprehended and is set to face charges related to the possession of a commercial quantity of illicit tobacco and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime. The police seized $1.9 million worth of illicit tobacco, around $80,000 in cash, six luxury watches valued at over $119,000, and various electronic devices during the operation.

In a separate but related operation, a 34-year-old man from Campbellfield was arrested after police intercepted a truck in Laverton North, uncovering more than four million cigarettes valued at approximately $5 million. An additional $100,000 in cash was seized from his residence, signaling a significant link to organized crime.

Detectives allege that both suspects are connected to a crime syndicate involved in laundering over $83 million in illicit profits through local businesses since May 2021. The seizure underscores the extensive criminal activities associated with illicit tobacco, as highlighted by Detective Inspector Graham Banks from Taskforce Lunar.

“This offending consistently goes hand in hand with other serious and violent crime. Regardless of the form that criminality takes place, it will be targeted by police,” Inspector Banks stated.

Both investigations are ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers immediately at 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au. This urgent operation reveals the serious implications of organized crime on communities and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat it. The developments remind citizens of the vital role they play in reporting suspicious activities to help keep their neighborhoods safe.
