UPDATE: Tim Ross is set to launch his new book, What a Ripper!, at the National Library on August 30, 2023, celebrating 60 everyday objects that have shaped Australian life. This engaging tribute not only honors iconic designs but also evokes nostalgia for anyone born before the internet era.
New reports confirm that Ross, a passionate advocate for Australian design, has compiled a list featuring items like the beloved Stackhat bike helmet and the trusty Dolphin torch, which many Australians fondly remember using daily. The book highlights items often overlooked yet deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Australia.
Ross reflects on how the book originated from his exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, which showcased these cherished objects. He stated, “There were all these items in the museum – Dolphin torches, Gold Phones, Planet lamps – and I thought, ‘Maybe we should do an exhibition on this?’”
The book features not just well-known items but also lesser-known treasures like the Frij personal cooler, the Kambrook power board, and the gravity-defying Computer Sock. These products have resonated with generations, creating a shared sense of nostalgia that Ross aims to capture.
On launch day, Ross will be joined by Mary Featherstone, a celebrated designer, who will share her experiences in innovative furniture design. Ross expresses his admiration for her energy and contributions to Australian culture: “She has such enthusiasm for life and incredible energy.”
Readers can look forward to humorous anecdotes and design insights throughout the book. Ross even shares a lighthearted moment regarding Speedo swimmers, inviting readers to recall their own childhood experiences, while also celebrating the Decor wine cooler, which won the Prince Philip Prize for Australian design in 1980.
As Australia’s design landscape evolves, Ross believes it’s crucial to remember the everyday items that once connected communities. “Today, there are a lot of really interesting things being designed, but they tend to be quite obscure,” he notes.
With a launch event promising engaging discussions and reflections, What a Ripper! aims to not only celebrate Australian design but also remind readers of the simple joys these items brought to their lives.
Join Tim Ross and Mary Featherstone at the National Library on August 30 at 3 PM for a celebration of design that resonates deeply with the heart of Australia. Tickets are available now, and this is an event you won’t want to miss.
