UPDATE: Thousands of pro-Palestine demonstrators are set to march across major cities in Australia today as calls for a ceasefire in Gaza intensify. The nationwide protests, spearheaded by the Justice for Palestine (JFP) Magan-djin group, kick off at 1 PM from Queens Gardens in Brisbane, with over 7,000 participants expected. This urgent action comes just days after a court blocked a planned route across the iconic Story Bridge due to safety concerns.
Rallies are also taking place in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and other cities throughout the day. The Sydney march starts at 1 PM from Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park, where notable figures like Grace Tame and Antoinette Lattouf will join the crowds.
In a statement on Facebook, the JFP Magan-djin group assured participants that marshals will be present to manage the flow of the march and crowd safety. “Marshals will help control pacing and ensure the flow of people is managed in the safest way possible,” the post read.
These protests are endorsed by prominent human rights organization Amnesty International, which emphasizes the urgency of halting the bloodshed in Gaza. “The right to protest is a protected right under international law,” the organization stated, stressing the need for accountability amid ongoing violence. They condemned Australia’s role in supplying military components to Israel, calling for an immediate ceasefire and an arms embargo.
The planned march in Brisbane faced challenges when the Queensland Police Service (QPS) blocked the initial route across the Story Bridge, citing public safety risks. Judge Janelle Brassington upheld this decision, stating the group lacked the necessary expertise to manage potential hazards, despite their intentions to mitigate risks.
Organizers adapted quickly, confirming a new route across the Victoria Bridge following the court’s ruling. “We have demonstrated over the past 22 months that we can organize safe and inclusive rallies,” said organizer Remah Naji.
As the national day of action unfolds, police have reiterated the importance of adhering to court decisions to ensure public safety. The protests highlight a critical moment in the ongoing conflict, with demonstrators demanding urgent action from the Australian government.
As these events develop, the public is urged to stay informed and engaged. The urgency of the situation in Gaza and the collective call for peace resonate deeply, making this a pivotal day in the fight for justice.
