Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Australia’s Jewish community in the wake of firebombing attacks linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Following statements from Mike Burgess, head of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), who confirmed investigations connecting the Iranian military group to these incidents, Albanese emphasized the government’s determination to act decisively.
During a recent interview, Albanese stated that the expulsion of Australia’s ambassador to Iran and the closure of the Iranian embassy were significant steps in countering threats posed by the Revolutionary Guard. He remarked, “The strong action we have taken — we need to change, legislate our anti-terror legislation in order to bring in the Revolutionary Guard.” Albanese acknowledged the need for transparency regarding the organization’s activities, asserting that exposing their motives is crucial for public awareness.
The Prime Minister highlighted the ongoing efforts of the government and security agencies to protect Jewish Australians, particularly from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, known for its history of violent terrorism. He stated, “We will work each and every day, and I think that we have very much taken what action is open to us, but we’ll continue to as well.” Albanese emphasized the importance of fostering a sense of security within Australia’s diverse communities, noting his recent discussions with the Australian Union of Jewish Students about education and policy.
Actions Against Terrorism
The Australian government is set to officially designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, though a specific timeline for this designation has not yet been provided. On Monday, October 9, 2023, intelligence agencies presented evidence linking the Revolutionary Guard to arson attacks on Jewish institutions, including the firebombing of Lewis’ Continental Kitchen in Bondi last October and the Adass Synagogue in Melbourne in December.
Burgess indicated that investigations are ongoing, with intelligence still being gathered regarding potential connections to other anti-Semitic incidents across Australia. He did not disclose whether these investigations extend beyond the states of New South Wales and Victoria.
Albanese reiterated the significance of multiculturalism in Australia, stating, “One of the great things about our country is our multiculturalism — that people of different faiths, different backgrounds, live side-by-side in neighborhoods and overwhelmingly, we’re enriched by the diversity that is modern Australia.” The Prime Minister urged the public to remain confident in expressing their identities and beliefs while assuring the Jewish community that the government remains vigilant.
The Prime Minister’s commitment to protecting Jewish Australians comes at a critical time, as the country grapples with the implications of international terrorism and domestic safety. With the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s activities under scrutiny, the Australian government is taking steps to ensure that all citizens can feel secure in their communities.
