Australia has taken decisive action following revelations about Iran’s involvement in antisemitic attacks on its soil. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) was primarily responsible for the investigation that linked Iran to incidents in Sydney and Melbourne last year. This investigation led the Australian government to sever diplomatic ties with Iran.
During an interview with ABC News, Albanese clarified the nature of the investigation, stating, “No, it was primarily ASIO’s investigation, and ASIO came to this determination.” He highlighted the thoroughness of ASIO’s work, explaining that the agency was able to trace the connections from the perpetrators of the crimes to the funding behind those actions.
The findings indicated that Iran was behind at least two antisemitic attacks in Australia. While the ABC has reported that some intelligence from partner agencies was utilized in these inquiries, it emphasized that the primary intelligence was sourced domestically. Albanese’s comments underscore the significance of Australia’s intelligence capabilities in addressing threats to national security.
In response to these findings, Iranian Ambassador to Australia Ahmad Sadeghi and three other Iranian officials have been expelled from the country. They have been given seven days to leave Australia, reflecting the seriousness with which the Australian government views these revelations. Furthermore, operations at Australia’s embassy in Tehran have been suspended, with all diplomats already evacuated.
The investigation also revealed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) directed the antisemitic attacks through a network of intermediaries. Mike Burgess, the head of ASIO, stated that some individuals involved in the attacks received financial compensation for their actions.
Legislation is currently pending that will designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, a move that underscores the Australian government’s commitment to countering external threats to its citizens. The decision to expel Iranian officials and suspend diplomatic operations signals a significant shift in Australia’s foreign policy approach towards Iran.
