A recent study by data scientist Rob ter Horst has revealed that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 outperforms several leading fitness trackers, including models from Garmin, Samsung, and Whoop, in terms of heart rate accuracy. This assessment, conducted at the University of Vienna, utilized extensive data analysis to compare the Ultra 2 against various competitors, establishing a new benchmark for fitness tracking technology.

Ter Horst’s research involved testing the Apple Watch Ultra 2 while using a Polar H10 chest strap as the control device for heart rate monitoring. The testing scenario included indoor running workouts, where the Ultra 2 demonstrated impressive alignment with the Polar H10 results. Notably, it was found to be more accurate than the Whoop MG, which is marketed as a “medical grade” device and showed a deviation of approximately 6% from the H10 readings.

In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 exhibited a deviation of 3%, while the Garmin Forerunner 570 and Fenix 7 had deviations of 7% and 9%, respectively. The Apple Watch Ultra 2’s performance remained consistent across various activities, matching closely with the Polar H10 in both cycling and outdoor runs. The Whoop MG’s accuracy faltered significantly, deviating by 15%, with the Garmin Forerunner 570 also showing less precise data at a 12% deviation.

Sleep Tracking Performance

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 also excelled in sleep tracking, achieving an accuracy of approximately 73% for REM and deep sleep monitoring when compared to the Hypnodyne ZMax as a control device. In terms of light sleep tracking, its accuracy climbed to 86.5%, surpassing even the Oura Gen 4 ring. In contrast, other competitors, including devices from Samsung, Whoop, and Garmin, fell short in sleep tracking accuracy.

With the Apple Watch Ultra 2 establishing itself as a leader in health tracking accuracy, speculation is growing around potential upgrades in the upcoming Ultra 3 model. Expected to be unveiled at Apple’s next major product launch, rumors suggest enhancements such as an improved display and 5G connectivity. Additionally, features for detecting high blood pressure could be included, further expanding its health monitoring capabilities.

Despite these advancements, battery life remains a significant challenge for Apple. Users continue to express concerns regarding the longevity of the watch, especially when compared to less expensive competitors that can operate for weeks on a single charge. There is optimism within the tech community that Apple will address these energy efficiency issues in future iterations of the Apple Watch.
