The search continues for alleged gunman Dezi Freeman, who remains at large following the fatal shooting of two police officers in Porepunkah, Victoria, on March 12, 2024. Freeman is described as heavily armed and dangerous, with police urging the public to remain vigilant as tributes pour in for the fallen officers.

Freeman, who was previously known as Desmond Filby, is accused of killing Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart during an ambush. The incident has left the community in shock, particularly as Thompson was nearing retirement after a long career in law enforcement, while de Waart was relatively new to the area but already recognized for his dedication to service.

Police have reported that there has been no confirmed sighting of Freeman since 10:30 AM on Tuesday, despite winter conditions and a significant police presence in the region. The search efforts have intensified, with local authorities expressing concern for the safety of community members who may have had conflicts with Freeman in the past.

Local residents, including Freeman’s former landlord, have voiced their fears for their safety, citing the unpredictable nature of the fugitive. Compounding these concerns is the revelation that Freeman lost his firearm licence five years ago, raising questions about how he obtained his current weaponry.

Chief Commissioner Mike Bush addressed the tragic loss of the officers, stating that it “struck at the heart of Victoria Police, the broader policing family and the community of Porepunkah.” The deaths of Thompson and de Waart have elicited a strong emotional response among their colleagues, with Wayne Gatt, secretary of the Police Association, noting that Thompson’s absence will leave a void that cannot be filled. He further remarked that de Waart naturally gravitated towards helping people, emphasizing the impact of his loss on the community.

In a display of respect, Melbourne’s state buildings were illuminated in blue on the evening following the shootings, and flags across the city were lowered to half-mast in honor of the slain officers. A third officer was injured in the incident and has been airlifted to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne for treatment.

As the investigation continues, police remain focused on apprehending Freeman and ensuring the safety of the Porepunkah community. The tragic events have not only affected those directly involved but have resonated throughout the entire region, highlighting the inherent risks faced by law enforcement personnel.
