Nearly 10 million homes and businesses across Australia will soon benefit from significantly faster internet connections as the National Broadband Network (NBN) prepares to launch accelerated plans in September 2023. The upgrade will provide customers with internet speeds that are five times faster than current offerings, all at no additional cost for eligible users.
An NBN spokesperson confirmed that approximately 9.8 million households and businesses will have access to these enhanced speeds when they become available next month. This initiative marks a substantial advancement for Australia’s internet infrastructure, promising to alleviate the frustrations of slow internet and buffering.
Eligibility and Connection Types
To take advantage of the new speeds, customers must first verify their connection type. Households with fibre connections directly into their homes or those utilizing Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) cables will be eligible for the upgraded services. In contrast, customers still using older copper line technologies, such as Fibre to the Node (FTTN), Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), will need to switch to a fibre connection to benefit from the faster internet service.
For those unsure about their current connection type, they can easily check by entering their address on the official NBN website or contacting their internet service provider. Additionally, it is important to note that even with the appropriate connection, customers will only experience faster speeds if they are subscribed to a plan that offers 100 Mbps or higher. Plans below this threshold will not see any changes, so users are encouraged to consider upgrading their current plans.
