UPDATE: The highly anticipated survival thriller, We Bury the Dead, is making its Western Australian premiere tonight at the CinefestOZ Film Prize Premiere. This gripping film, along with Birthright, is vying for the coveted $100,000 Film Prize, the largest dedicated to Australian feature films.

Filmed in Albany and the stunning Great Southern region of Western Australia, We Bury the Dead has already made a significant impact on the local economy, returning an estimated $9.3 million. This premiere highlights the Cook Government’s commitment to strengthening the screen industry and creating job opportunities in the region.

The film’s premiere is part of a week-long celebration leading up to the Film Prize announcement on September 6, 2025. The Film Prize Jury, comprised of industry leaders, will attend the red carpet events and decide which of the four finalists—including Songs Inside and One More Shot—will take home the top prize.

Minister for Creative Industries, Simone McGurk, emphasized the film’s economic benefits, stating, “The Cook Government is investing in our local screen industry, which aims to build Western Australian regional capacity and contribute to the liveability and vibrancy of Western Australian regional communities.”

Minister for Regional Development, Stephen Dawson, highlighted the film’s local impact, remarking, “We Bury the Dead returned approximately $3.1 million to regional towns, showcasing how productions create jobs and opportunities that strengthen our communities.”

Filming for Birthright, directed by Western Australian’s Zoe Pepper, took place over five weeks in the Perth Hills. Both films received significant backing from Screen Australia, Screenwest, and Lotterywest.

As excitement builds around tonight’s screening, local artists and filmmakers are rallying behind this initiative that not only showcases their talent but also promotes the region to a global audience. The event promises to be a pivotal moment for Western Australia’s thriving screen industry.
