UPDATE: In a significant shift, 19-year-old Jez Rigoni of the Wangaratta Rovers is set to make his mark in Australian football as he prepares for the grand final qualifier against Myrtleford this Saturday at Wangaratta Showgrounds. Rigoni, who has transitioned from cricket to football, is one of the youngest players in this crucial match.
Rovers’ coach Sam Murray praised Rigoni’s commitment, stating, “Jez has really doubled down on footy the last two years and has grown a lot in a short period of time.” His performance in this year’s Victorian Football League (VFL) has solidified his role as a key player for the team.
Previously a promising cricket talent, Rigoni spent his last three years at Caulfield Grammar, where he was focused on the sport during years 10 and 11. “I was loving it in year 11, but then in year 12 I was trying to focus on my footy more,” Rigoni explained. This shift in focus led him to decline a spot in Victoria’s under-19 squad last summer.
Having played alongside notable players like Ollie Pope during the 2024 World Cup in South Africa, Rigoni reflected on his sports journey. “I might come back to cricket at a later time,” he noted. He appreciates the team culture in footy, saying, “The footy clubs I’ve played at have always had a great culture, and that’s probably won me over.”
This season, Rigoni has split his time between the Rovers, the Sandringham VFL club, and Oakleigh in the Talent League, playing a total of 19 games. He has adapted to various positions on the field, stating, “I’ve played half-back, wing, half-forward, deep forward,” highlighting his versatility.
As the Rovers gear up as favorites against Myrtleford, the anticipation is palpable. The match promises to draw a large crowd, especially with a forecast of 21 degrees for Saturday. Rigoni’s journey from cricket to footy resonates with many young athletes, underscoring the importance of passion and commitment in sports.
