castlemaine-magpies-capture-fourth-consecutive-premiership-title

UPDATE: The Castlemaine Magpies have clinched their fourth consecutive premiership title, solidifying their dominance in the Central Victorian Football League (CVFL) with a decisive 27-point grand final victory over Golden Square at the QEO on July 14, 2023. This remarkable win cements Castlemaine’s status as a powerhouse, with an impressive record of 51 wins from 55 games since joining the CVFL in 2022.

In front of a roaring crowd, the Magpies showcased their skill and determination, leading from the very first whistle. The final score was 4.12 (36) to Golden Square’s 1.3 (9), despite some early inaccuracies in front of goal. Castlemaine’s performance was marked by their relentless pressure and superior territory control, making it clear that they were the team to beat.

The emotional highlight of the match came from coach Jordan Cochrane, who celebrated not only the victory but also the rare opportunity to coach three of his sisters: captain Tiahna, Ella, and Hannah Cochrane. All four of Castlemaine’s goals were scored by the Cochrane sisters, with Hannah netting two, and Tiahna and Ella contributing one each.

The CVFL Medal for best on ground went to Castlemaine midfielder Maeve Tupper, who played a pivotal role in the Magpies’ midfield. Tupper expressed her pride in the team, stating,

“I’m super proud of the girls… if they didn’t put in all the work and effort that they do then we wouldn’t be standing here with four in a row.”

Though Golden Square managed to score their only goal midway through the third quarter, Castlemaine’s defense proved stifling, allowing only one more behind for the remainder of the match. Cochrane noted,

“It was probably one of our uglier wins over the past four years, but that’s what’s great about our side, it’s so versatile.”

The thrilling atmosphere of the grand final was not limited to the senior match. Earlier in the evening, the under-18s also delivered an edge-of-your-seat finale, with Woorinen narrowly defeating Sandhurst by a single point, 2.12 (24) to 3.5 (23).

As the celebrations begin, the Castlemaine Magpies reflect on their incredible journey, with each premiership victory deepening their legacy in the CVFL. This triumph not only showcases their athletic prowess but also highlights the emotional connections within the team, making this victory especially meaningful for the Cochrane family and their supporters.

With their sights set on yet another successful season, the Magpies are expected to continue their impressive run in the league, leaving fans eager for what comes next in their championship journey.
