The Tasmanian Government has launched a new strategy aimed at enhancing the midwifery workforce in the region. Titled Midwifery Matters, this strategy outlines plans for the 2025-2030 period and is now open for public consultation. The government emphasizes the significance of midwifery through the perspectives of Tasmanian women, addressing key areas such as workforce development, education, national policy, and system design.
Bridget Archer, the Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, highlighted the essential role midwives play in providing quality maternity care for mothers and their babies. “Midwives are absolutely critical to maternity care,” she stated. “We know that supporting, valuing, and strengthening the midwifery workforce is essential to delivering continuity of care and improving outcomes.”
The draft strategy features 20 actions designed to enhance and expand midwifery services across Tasmania. These actions aim to ensure women and families benefit from a responsive and sustainable maternity system. Minister Archer noted that the strategy is informed by the experiences and priorities of women and families, ensuring that maternity care remains respectful, safe, and person-centred.
Consultation on the draft strategy is currently underway, with opportunities for online feedback and public forums available until October 5, 2025. The government is encouraging participation to gather a wide range of insights that will shape the final strategy.
Focus on Workforce Development and Education
The Tasmanian Midwifery Workforce Strategy aims to address critical issues that influence the midwifery sector, including workforce shortages and educational pathways for aspiring midwives. By fostering a supportive environment for training and professional development, the government aims to build a robust workforce capable of meeting the needs of the community.
Minister Archer emphasized the importance of collaboration with healthcare professionals and educational institutions to ensure that training programs are aligned with the evolving demands of maternity care. This approach is seen as vital for retaining skilled midwives and attracting new talent to the profession.
Engagement with the Community
The Tasmanian Government is committed to an inclusive consultation process, inviting feedback from a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including healthcare providers, midwives, and families. This engagement is intended to foster a collaborative dialogue that will enhance the strategy’s effectiveness and relevance.
The government’s proactive stance demonstrates its dedication to improving maternal health outcomes in Tasmania. By prioritizing midwifery and ensuring that the workforce is well-supported, the Tasmanian Government aims to create a maternity care system that is not only sustainable but also responsive to the needs of its citizens.
As public consultation continues, the government welcomes all contributions to refine the strategy further, ensuring it reflects the aspirations of the community it serves.
