BREAKING: Two teenage boys have been charged with driving offences following a dramatic police chase in Kununurra early Wednesday morning. This incident marks yet another alarming pursuit in the region, reflecting a disturbing trend of youth involvement in vehicle thefts and reckless driving.
At approximately 2 AM, local police spotted a green Toyota Camry, reported stolen, on Carbeen Street. When officers activated their emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, the driver allegedly fled, leading police on a chaotic chase through various streets before abandoning the vehicle on Flametree Street. Authorities apprehended a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old boy nearby. The younger teen faces charges for driving offences, while the older boy has been charged with stealing a motor vehicle.
This incident comes just days after another police pursuit in Kununurra on Monday, where four boys aged between 12 and 15 were charged for allegedly ramming a police vehicle with a stolen car. Fortunately, the two officers inside escaped with minor injuries and were treated at Kununurra Hospital.
In addition, police reported a separate incident in Broome where a stolen vehicle rammed a police car over the weekend, prompting a foot chase into the bushland. No injuries were reported from that incident, but it highlights the increasing danger posed by these reckless pursuits.
On Sunday around 12:45 AM, police in Broome attempted to stop a stolen white Toyota Corolla traveling on Dora Street. The driver refused to stop, leading to another pursuit that ended with the vehicle found abandoned on Gubinge Road. Both vehicles involved in these incidents had been stolen from properties in Cable Beach, according to the WA Police.
Kimberley District Superintendent John Hutchinson emphasized the department’s commitment to tackling this surge in youth-related vehicle crime. He stated, “We will continue to deploy sufficient resources to apprehend and put before the courts any violent offenders who put the safety of the community at risk.”
As investigations continue, police urge anyone with information or footage regarding these incidents to contact Crime Stoppers. This situation remains fluid, and authorities are on high alert as they work to restore safety in the community.
