The picturesque village of Mt Victoria is set to transform into a vibrant celebration of cinema this weekend as it hosts the inaugural Bazfest. Scheduled from September 12 to 14, 2023, the festival will feature screenings of three iconic films by renowned Australian director Baz Luhrmann: Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, and Moulin Rouge. This unique event promises a blend of film, music, and community spirit, inviting attendees to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of Luhrmann’s storytelling.

Festivities and Activities Await

Bazfest will take place at Mt Vic Flicks, where guests can enjoy screenings alongside a variety of dining options, including breakfasts, lunches, and dinners at local cafes, hotels, and guesthouses. The festival atmosphere will be enhanced with music and markets scattered throughout the village, creating an engaging environment for both locals and visitors.

Attendees are encouraged to embrace the glamour of Luhrmann’s films by dressing in themed outfits. Prizes will be awarded for the best-dressed participants, evoking the extravagance of the Moulin Rouge cabaret, the romantic elegance of Romeo + Juliet, and the vibrant style of Strictly Ballroom.

Shane McLucas, owner of the V&A Guesthouse and the festival’s visionary, expressed his passion for Luhrmann’s work. “I love anything that Baz and Catherine Martin do,” he stated, noting the guesthouse’s decor features Martin-designed wallpaper. McLucas highlighted the significance of the “red curtain trilogy,” referring to the three films and their shared theatrical motifs, including dance, poetry, and music.

A Community Celebration

The response from the Mt Victoria community has been overwhelmingly positive, with local shop owners preparing to decorate their establishments to reflect the festival’s spirit. Mt Victoria Public will host a market on Saturday, running from 09:00 to 14:00, adding to the weekend’s festivities.

Expect an array of entertainment, including live music performances in the park featuring the George Washing Machine Trio and John Stuart’s Cosmic Lounge. As McLucas explained, the festival’s theme is “historic and unexpected.” Attendees may encounter lively performers, including burlesque dancers and drag queens, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

The film screenings are scheduled as follows: Moulin Rouge will open the festival on Friday, followed by Strictly Ballroom on Saturday, and finally, a masquerade matinee of Romeo + Juliet on Sunday at 13:10. Organizers emphasize that this festival is more than just a series of films; it aims to create an immersive experience that celebrates cinema, fashion, music, food, and community.

Bazfest is proudly supported by several sponsors, including Bendigo Bank, and serves as a tribute to Baz Luhrmann’s birthday on September 17. As the festival unfolds, attendees can look forward to a weekend filled with joy, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling.
