URGENT UPDATE: The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has issued an immediate appeal for 12,500 blood and plasma donors to address a critical shortage following record demand this winter. This urgent call comes as appointment cancellations peaked, severely affecting blood supply.
As of today, Lifeblood needs 4,350 additional donors in Victoria alone to help stabilize dwindling reserves. Recent data reveals that demand for blood reached unprecedented levels during June, July, and August, coinciding with the highest rates of appointment cancellations since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stephen Cornelissen, Lifeblood’s CEO, stated, “We’re urging anyone who is eligible and feeling healthy and well to book a donation immediately and help restore our blood stocks.” He emphasized the “perfect storm” of high demand and low bookings, urging immediate action.
The organization reports that a blood donor is needed every 18 seconds in Australia to support patients facing cancer treatments, major surgeries, trauma, and childbirth. Cornelissen added, “Just one blood donation can save up to three lives, and all it takes is an hour of time.”
Individuals wishing to contribute can arrange a donation by calling 13 14 95, visiting lifeblood.com.au, or downloading the Lifeblood App. With the need for all blood types critical, now is the time to step forward.
Don’t wait for someone else—your donation could be the difference for someone in need. Act now to help alleviate the strain on Australia’s blood supply!
