Ben Griffin holds a narrow one-shot lead heading into the final round of the Procore Championship at the Silverado Resort in Napa. The Ryder Cup rookie, who is one of ten members of Team USA’s Ryder Cup squad competing, finished the third round with a score of two-under 70, placing him at sixteen under for the tournament.
Griffin began the day with a three-shot advantage but faced stiff competition from world No 1 amateur Jackson Koivun, who is now just one stroke behind after posting a third-round score of 68. Furthermore, Scottie Scheffler, the world No 1, surged into contention with an impressive eight-under 64, putting him just two shots off the lead.
Garrick Higgo holds fourth place at thirteen under. Meanwhile, fellow Ryder Cup players JJ Spaun and Russell Henley slipped back, finishing the round at nine under and tied for ninth after scores of 72 and 74, respectively. Cam Young is the only other member of Keegan Bradley‘s Ryder Cup team in the top 20, tied for 17th at seven under.
Scheffler’s strong performance included a streak of three consecutive birdies starting from the third hole, followed by another three-birdie burst from the eighth. Despite a double-bogey at the 14th hole, which resulted from an errant tee shot and a challenging bunker situation, he rebounded impressively with birdies on three of his last four holes.
“I aimed to play good consistent golf, and I achieved that,” said Scheffler. “I hit a lot of greens and holed some putts.”
Griffin also showcased his skill with three birdies in his round, though he experienced his first bogey of the tournament at the par-five last hole. His final shot landed short of the green, and a tricky chip left him needing to complete a challenging up-and-down to maintain his lead.
Despite the pressure from Scheffler, Griffin remains focused on his own game. “I’m not too worried about what he [Scheffler] is going to do,” Griffin stated. “I just have to play better than him. If I do that tomorrow, I should be able to lift the trophy. There are other competitors in the mix, but everyone knows what Scottie Scheffler is capable of, and I need to stay in front.”
