ALCOR Scientific has announced a significant advancement in erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) testing, addressing a longstanding issue of limited blood sample stability. The company’s innovative iSED analyzers now extend the stability of blood samples from 4 hours to an impressive 28 hours, a change that has the potential to enhance laboratory workflows and improve patient care.
ESR testing is among the most commonly ordered blood tests, crucial for diagnosing and monitoring various medical conditions, including infections, autoimmune diseases, and certain cancers. Traditionally, blood samples must be tested or refrigerated within four hours to ensure accuracy. Delays in transportation and processing often lead to compromised results, presenting a challenge for laboratories.
With the new technology, ALCOR Scientific has effectively increased the window for sample integrity by seven times compared to conventional methods. The iSED analyzers utilize a fully automated process to measure red blood cell aggregation, which is the first step in the sedimentation process. This enhancement significantly increases the time samples can remain at room temperature while maintaining their reliability.
In addition to the extended stability at room temperature, the iSED analyzers also improve refrigerated sample stability from 24 hours to 48 hours. This dual improvement allows laboratories to operate with greater flexibility and efficiency.
Jim Post, CEO of ALCOR Scientific, highlighted the implications of this innovation, stating, “ESR is one of the most frequently ordered tests globally, yet conventional testing methods put laboratories in a constant race against the clock. By extending sample stability to 28 hours, our analyzers give labs the flexibility they need to operate more efficiently while ensuring more accurate results and sparing patients from the discomfort of unnecessary repeat draws. It’s a win for both labs and patients.”
