US President Donald Trump has announced that he will meet with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese “very soon.” Speaking to reporters as he departed the White House for a visit to the United Kingdom, Trump mentioned, “Your leader is coming over to see me very soon.” While the exact timing of the meeting remains unspecified, it is anticipated to occur in conjunction with Albanese’s upcoming trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Albanese is set to arrive in New York for the UNGA’s “high-level week,” which begins on September 22, 2025. There is speculation that a meeting with Trump could take place during this visit, particularly given the significance of the discussions typically held on the sidelines of the assembly. In a recent tweet, Albanese confirmed the ongoing dialogue with Trump, stating, “Tonight I had another warm and constructive conversation with President @realDonaldTrump. We discussed our trade and economic relationship as well as areas for growth including critical minerals.”
The rapport between the two leaders appears to be growing stronger. Trump referred to Albanese as a “good man” following their fourth phone call earlier this month. Albanese reciprocated, describing the conversation as “really warm.”
A face-to-face meeting had been previously scheduled during the G7 Summit in Canada in June, but plans were disrupted when Trump returned to the United States early to address the escalating Iran-Israel conflict. Both leaders have expressed interest in strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in the areas of trade and security.
As the UNGA approaches, the anticipated meeting between Trump and Albanese could mark a significant step in US-Australia relations, emphasizing shared interests and collaboration on global issues.
