UPDATE: Construction has officially begun on a much-anticipated bus stop upgrade at the intersection of Ravenhill Boulevard and Somerton Road in Roxburgh Park, promising to enhance safety and accessibility for local residents. This critical upgrade, initiated by Public Transport Victoria, addresses long-standing concerns about the bus stop’s inadequate facilities.
The closure of the bus stop is now in effect, with repairs underway to transform the site into a safer waiting area. Passengers have struggled with the previous conditions, which included an uneven gravel surface and no shelter, forcing them to stand perilously close to fast-moving traffic at speeds of up to 70 km/h.
Local residents have expressed their frustrations repeatedly. Northern Metropolitan MP Evan Mulholland emphasized the ongoing issues, stating, “Local residents have been forced to trudge through mud, puddles, and grass to stand on uneven gravel right next to traffic. Many locals have contacted me about this bus stop being inaccessible for the elderly and disabled. This is unsafe, unpleasant, and unacceptable.”
This upgrade is part of a broader initiative to improve public transport accessibility in Melbourne, particularly as the area experiences rapid population growth. With increased reliance on public transport, community members have long called for the installation of safer and more reliable infrastructure to support their daily travel needs.
The new design will feature a proper footpath and level access, making it easier for individuals using wheelchairs, walking frames, and prams to navigate the area. Once completed, the refurbished bus stop is expected to provide a safer, more comfortable waiting environment for all passengers, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly and parents with young children.
As construction progresses, local residents are urged to stay informed about the timeline for completion and any further developments. This upgrade not only marks a significant improvement in public transport facilities but also highlights the community’s ongoing advocacy for better infrastructure.
Stay tuned for more updates on this essential project as it unfolds. The Roxburgh Park community is well on its way to a safer commuting experience!
