Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 champion, is facing a challenging period in his career as he grapples with a dramatic decline in race wins since the introduction of new regulations in 2022. After an impressive streak that included eight victories in the 2021 season, Hamilton has struggled significantly, finishing without a win in 2022 and 2023, and managing only two victories in 2024.

At 40 years old, Hamilton’s performance has led to scrutiny, with some, including former racer Ralf Schumacher, suggesting that age may be contributing to his struggles. As the younger generation of drivers emerges, questions about Hamilton’s future in the sport become more pressing. Comparisons have been made to tennis star Novak Djokovic, who has acknowledged the rising talents in his field. Still, Hamilton’s supporters, Ferrari management, and even Hamilton himself may hold hope that he can adapt to the evolving challenges of Formula 1.

Struggles with Current Regulations

During a recent media session in Baku, Hamilton expressed his frustrations about the current car generation, confirming his desire to see them replaced. When asked if he was glad to be moving on from the current regulations, he replied simply, “Yes.” This sentiment reflects his ongoing difficulties with the ground effect cars introduced in 2022. Unlike previous models that generated aerodynamic downforce primarily through visible surfaces like wings, the new designs focus on the car’s floor.

Starting in 2026, regulations will shift once more, potentially reducing the significance of the Venturi tunnels that have created challenges for many drivers, including Hamilton. Analysts speculate that these changes could favour Hamilton’s driving style. Until then, his focus is on mitigating further damage in the 2025 season.

Currently, Hamilton has not secured a victory since joining Ferrari this year, aside from winning the F1 sprint in Shanghai. He sits sixth in the championship standings, trailing his teammate, Charles Leclerc, by 46 points. Hamilton remains pessimistic about the team’s chances on upcoming street circuits, stating, “I don’t anticipate anything changing in any of those races,” highlighting that competitors like McLaren and Red Bull are currently ahead.

Looking Ahead to 2026

With teams, including Ferrari, shifting their focus towards the 2026 regulations, development for the current 2025 season has taken a back seat. Hamilton lamented, “You’re then just stuck with what you have for the year.” This lack of development has made the current season less exciting for both drivers and fans alike.

Despite the challenges, there is optimism about the future. Hamilton hinted that the 2026 season could bring numerous upgrades, leading to a more competitive environment. As the Formula 1 landscape evolves, Hamilton’s ability to adapt to new regulations will determine whether he can continue to compete at the highest level or if the sport will fully transition to a new generation of drivers.

As the countdown to 2026 begins, all eyes will be on Hamilton to see if he can reclaim his place among the sport’s elite.
