BREAKING: Two people are dead following separate, alarming incidents of domestic violence in New South Wales, raising urgent concerns about safety. A 60-year-old man has died in custody after police responded to reports of domestic assault in Lurnea, Sydney, on Friday afternoon.
Authorities confirmed that police and paramedics were dispatched after receiving calls about an alleged assault involving a 58-year-old woman. She was found with serious injuries at the scene and was transported to Liverpool Hospital for urgent medical care.
The man, who fled the scene, was located shortly after in a nearby suburb. He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is now investigating the circumstances surrounding his death in custody, with a report to be filed for the coroner.

Police were alerted to the situation after reports of a domestic disturbance. Officers responded promptly to the location and found the woman, whose identity remains unconfirmed. The man was apprehended on-site and taken to Byron Bay Police Station for questioning.
These tragic events are part of a larger crisis in NSW, where over 38,000 domestic violence assault incidents were reported to police from July 2024 to June 2025, according to the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.
