Peter Hatton, a seasoned boxing coach, has established a new training club named Team Hatton, aimed at nurturing local children in the sport. After spending over eleven years managing a gym in Dandenong, Hatton is committed to instilling discipline and technique in young athletes.

“I’m very old school,” Hatton shared. “I’m very strict on technique, punctuality, and ensuring their fitness is well-rounded.” He trains children from the age of four and is enthusiastic about their progress. Notably, one of his champions is set to compete in both the Oceania and World Championships.

Despite the club’s promising talent, financial challenges loom large. Hatton revealed that five of his champions were expected to attend the championships, but only one could afford the steep cost of $7,000 per person. The club has been self-sustaining, operating without financial support from the City of Greater Dandenong Council or other government resources.

In light of this situation, Team Hatton is planning to apply for a community grant from the council to alleviate financial burdens. Additionally, Hatton and his team are organizing boxing events to help fund their champions’ participation in competitions.

Jim Memeti, a local council member who has known Hatton since childhood, expressed admiration for his dedication. “I was always aware that he was one of the best fighters not just in Dandenong, but in the country,” Memeti stated. He highlighted Hatton’s commitment to giving back to the community, saying, “It’s great to see that he has put his passion into training the younger generations, still involved in the local community he grew up in.”

Memeti emphasized the importance of representation for the children at Team Hatton. “It’s a great sense of belonging for the kids, whether they are competing or practicing, to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects positively on Team Hatton.”

As Team Hatton continues to grow, its future hinges on securing funding and community support. The club aims to empower the next generation of boxers while fostering a sense of community and belonging among its young athletes.
