UPDATE: A dramatic late-night police pursuit in Blacktown, Sydney has resulted in serious charges against two teenagers after a stolen car rammed police vehicles, injuring an officer and prompting multiple shots fired. The incident unfolded on September 30, 2023, around 9:15 PM when officers attempted to stop a suspected stolen Citroen sedan.
As police pursued the vehicle through several suburbs, it ultimately crashed into two parked cars in Leichhardt. The driver then intentionally rammed three police cars and drove aggressively towards officers. During the standoff, the vehicle reversed into a 27-year-old officer, who fell and suffered a concussion; he has since been released from the hospital.
Acting Superintendent Adam Solah confirmed that one officer fired their weapon while another deployed a taser, but the suspects managed to flee the scene. The abandoned vehicle was later discovered in a driveway in Petersham.
“We’re very lucky that no one was killed, including police,” Acting Supt Solah stated during a press briefing on Sunday.
In a swift response, authorities arrested a 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl at a home in Erskineville around 2 PM on Sunday. The boy faces 10 charges, including police pursuit, assaulting a police officer, and five counts of property damage. The girl has been charged with being carried in a vehicle taken without consent and breach of bail. Both were denied bail and are scheduled to appear in Children’s Court on Monday.
This alarming incident highlights the ongoing challenges police face with rampant vehicle thefts and reckless driving. As investigations continue, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant regarding stolen vehicles in the area.
In a separate incident, a 36-year-old man was charged following a police pursuit and siege in Sydney’s northwest on Friday. This individual faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm without a permit and drug offenses. He is expected to appear before Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.
