URGENT UPDATE: Five public toilets across the Macedon Ranges have been abruptly closed due to extensive damage caused by copper thieves. The thefts occurred overnight on September 16, leading to significant disruptions in community services.
The affected locations include the toilets at Sankey Reserve in Gisborne, Ross Watt Reserve in New Gisborne, Campaspe Park in Woodend, Kyneton Botanic Gardens in Kyneton, and Stanley Park in Macedon. The Macedon Ranges Council confirmed that the theft of copper pipes resulted in the mains water supply being cut off, leaving residents and visitors without essential facilities.
Dom Testoni, Director of Assets and Operations, expressed disappointment over the incidents. “Copper theft causes significant damage to community infrastructure, often resulting in unnecessary costs to council and impacting valuable public services while repairs are carried out,” he stated. The council is actively collaborating with law enforcement to investigate the thefts.
Repairs for the damaged toilets were expedited; however, costs may soar into the thousands of dollars. Testoni emphasized the need for enhanced security measures, stating, “While we already have some security measures in place across council buildings, we will continue to explore measures to reduce vandalism such as improved design, lighting, and monitoring.”
The community is urged to report any information related to the thefts. For tips, contact the Police Assistance Line at 131 444 or reach out to Crime Stoppers Victoria at 1800 333 000. Reports can also be submitted online at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
This incident not only highlights the vulnerability of public infrastructure but also underscores the urgent need for community vigilance. As authorities work to restore these vital services, residents are reminded of the impact such criminal acts have on public welfare and safety.
