UPDATE: The Hume League Grand Final at Walbundrie on July 15, 2023, has generated a remarkable $55,000 in gate receipts, matching last year’s figures and showcasing the league’s growing popularity. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd, with spectators thrilled by the pristine condition of the oval, a major talking point among fans and players alike.

League President Phil Bouffler expressed his delight, stating, “The gate takings were pretty much lineball with the past couple of seasons.” Despite initial concerns about the weather, the turnout was bolstered by the participation of 11 of the 12 clubs in at least one grand final.

The finals series was fiercely competitive, with an average winning margin of just 14 points across six matches. The highlight was Osborne’s 25-point victory over Holbrook in the grand final, emphasizing the heightened competitiveness of this year’s league.

“We’re thrilled with the attendance for our biggest match of the season,” Bouffler noted. “The junior grand finals were also spectacular, showcasing incredible talent.” The excitement was palpable, with programs selling out quickly—1,500 were ordered and gone within the first reserves match, prompting organizers to plan for more next year.

Bouffler commented on the success of the two Sunday finals, stating, “These matches were great opportunities for clubs to host and helped ease traffic at the Walbundrie Oval.” He emphasized the pride in the oval’s condition, saying, “People haven’t stopped raving about how good the ground looks now.”

As the league considers future improvements, Bouffler remains committed to a single club managing the catering during finals. “I know some leagues divide catering duties, but we prefer to have one club each year to ensure everything runs smoothly,” he explained.

The surge in attendance and engagement at the Hume League finals highlights a growing trend towards community support for local sports, as fans flock to witness the excitement of competitive matches.

What’s next? With the finals now concluded, the league will reflect on this season’s successes and begin preparations for next year, with a focus on further enhancing the fan experience and continuing to draw in record crowds. The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive, indicating a bright future ahead for the Hume League.
