URGENT UPDATE: A significant call has just emerged from the Point Cook Action Group, advocating for an immediate increase in public school bus routes in the Point Cook area. Karthick Thanigaimani, the group’s president, emphasized that expanding school bus services would deliver crucial benefits for families and students, particularly in alleviating traffic and parking chaos during peak hours.
“We need more public school buses to ease traffic congestion and reduce parking issues caused by school drop-offs,” Thanigaimani stated. He expressed that additional bus routes would also lessen the burden on parents who currently struggle with daily school commutes. “It will also help kids learn how to navigate public transport and enhance their safety,” he added.
Currently, public school bus services in Wyndham include routes from Werribee South and Wyndham Harbour to Homestead Senior Secondary College and Alamanda K-9 College in Point Cook. However, advocates are pushing for more to accommodate the growing student population.
A spokesperson from the Department of Transport and Planning confirmed that the government actively monitors demand for public school bus services, stating, “We operate dedicated school buses and route buses across the state, including in Wyndham, to get students to school.” The spokesperson assured that the department regularly evaluates its network and makes necessary improvements.
Notably, specific criteria guide the government’s decision to provide additional school bus routes. According to sources, the department considers factors such as the distance students travel—particularly those exceeding three kilometres to their zoned government schools—and the location of the nearest bus stop, which must be more than 800 metres away. Adjustments to existing routes may be made when gaps are identified in the public transport system, ensuring that students can reach school with ease.
As the demand for school transport rises, parents and students are urged to engage with local representatives to express their needs and support this initiative. The Point Cook Action Group is rallying community support to ensure that the message reaches decision-makers swiftly.
Stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops. The call for increased school bus services is gaining momentum, and it’s critical for families to get involved in this important discussion.
