victoria-launches-976-million-road-maintenance-blitz-now

UPDATE: The Victoria state government has just announced a massive $976 million road maintenance blitz aimed at rebuilding, repairing, and resurfacing key highways and local roads across the state. Launched by Roads and Road Safety Minister Melissa Horne in Kyneton, this urgent initiative is set to transform the state’s road network from now until mid-2026.

“This investment is crucial for the roads that Victorians depend on daily—from highways connecting major centers to local roads that keep our communities moving,” Horne stated. This blitz will kick off immediately, with crews expected to complete thousands of projects over the next nine months.

The focus will be on the state’s busiest travel and trade routes, including the Western Highway, Hume Highway, Calder Highway, and Princes Highway. In metropolitan areas, crucial upgrades will be made to the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, Leakes Road, and Warburton Highway, ensuring smoother journeys for all commuters.

Approximately 70 percent of the funding will be directed towards regional roads, addressing critical needs based on expert assessments and community feedback. The blitz will cover a broad range of maintenance tasks, including pothole repairs, road rehabilitation, and upgrading traffic lights and signage.

In addition to road improvements, crews will be active in mowing and maintaining tens of thousands of kilometers of roadsides, inspecting and repairing thousands of bridges, and cleaning graffiti. The comprehensive nature of this initiative signifies a commitment to not only improve infrastructure but also enhance the safety and aesthetic of Victoria’s roadways.

The government emphasizes that these upgrades are vital for supporting local economies and improving overall safety for all road users. As work begins, residents can expect visible changes that will enhance their daily commutes and contribute positively to the community.
