BREAKING: A police dog named Rocco has been injured after being violently thrown from a patrol vehicle during a high-speed collision on the Tullamarine Freeway in Melbourne. The incident, which occurred earlier today, involved a reckless 19-year-old driver behind the wheel of a high-powered Mercedes, resulting in a serious crash that has left both the officer and Rocco extremely fortunate to escape with relatively minor injuries.
The unmarked police car was struck by the Mercedes, sending it airborne and flipping over a barrier. “That they’ve both got out of the vehicle relatively unscathed is nothing more than a miracle to be quite honest,” stated Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Boysen. Rocco, a five-year-old German shepherd, was thrown onto the freeway during the violent impact.
Witnesses reported that the crash exhibited “massive force,” with Boysen adding, “It’s literally opened the back of the car up like a can opener.” Despite sustaining injuries himself, Rocco’s handler immediately rushed to his side after the collision. A nearby passerby acted quickly, securing Rocco and preventing further harm.
The driver, identified as an unlicensed teenager, has been arrested, while a 21-year-old female passenger also suffered injuries in the crash. This reckless act not only endangered lives but also disrupted the critical work of the K9 unit.
Rocco was scheduled to assist in a search for accused killer Dezi Freeman next week and participate in the K9 unit’s 50-year celebration. However, following this incident, Rocco will be taking some much-needed rest off duty. According to Boysen, “He was as keen as anything to get out of the vets, pulling on the lead,” indicating the dog’s resilient spirit despite the ordeal.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge caution on the roads, particularly regarding unlicensed drivers. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and its potential impact on law enforcement and community safety.
Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops. The police are expected to provide more information on the charges against the teen driver and Rocco’s recovery status in the coming hours.
