UPDATE: A significant milestone in local history was celebrated on September 20, 2025, as the Lowan Lodge 107 commemorated 140 years of Freemasonry in Nhill. The event featured a dramatic reenactment of the cornerstone ceremony for the Nhill Post Office, showcasing the enduring legacy of this community-focused organization.

The ceremony was marked by a lively march to the Post Office, attended by local Freemasons and community members. Attendees united in song, starting with God Save the King, creating an atmosphere of pride and camaraderie. WBro Wiremu Larkins, the Worshipful Master of the lodge, took center stage as he received the original building plans, which were confirmed to be accurate.

In a ceremonial display, WBro Larkins, along with WBro Graeme Price and VWBro Bill Howarth, inspected the cornerstone. They placed a plumb rule, a level, and a square in position before WBro Larkins poured wine and oil and sprinkled grain on the stone. The cornerstone was then officially declared “well and truly laid” after three taps with a gavel, followed by the resounding singing of Rule Britannia and cheers from the enthusiastic crowd.

The celebration continued as WBro Rhys Webb shared a rich history of the Nhill Post Office and the lodge’s significant contributions to the community since its inception in 1885. As part of the festivities, a tree was planted by WBro Larkins and VWBro Haby in front of the Post Office, symbolizing growth and continuity, along with a plaque unveiled to commemorate the occasion.

The evening wrapped up with a communal dinner at the Farmers Arms, where traditional toasts were exchanged. RWBro John McTaggart, representing the Grand Master, praised the lodge for its historical impact and commitment to community service. The event drew representatives from various local organizations, including the Nhill CWA, Nhill SES, Hindmarsh Shire Council, Nhill Lions Club, and Nhill Rotary Club, showcasing the strong community ties and support among these groups.

The celebration not only highlighted the achievements of Freemasonry in Nhill but also reinforced the organization’s mission of supporting individuals, families, and the community at large. As this historic event unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of Freemasonry on local heritage and community spirit.
