UPDATE: Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson has officially launched a high-profile delegation from Western Australia to the International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2025) in Sydney. This urgent mission, which began on Saturday, aims to enhance the state’s presence in the global space sector, featuring a robust team of 16 leading organizations specializing in engineering, robotics, and geospatial mapping.

With approximately 10,000 attendees from over 100 countries expected, the IAC 2025 is set to be a pivotal event. The theme this year, “Sustainable Space: Resilient Earth,” underscores the crucial link between innovative space initiatives and environmental sustainability. As part of the event’s “Australia zone,” Western Australia will showcase its burgeoning space infrastructure alongside stunning imagery of the state’s night skies.

Minister Dawson emphasized the importance of this trip, stating, “WA is bringing a large delegation across the country to IAC 2025 and putting on display exactly what our continually growing space sector has to offer the world.” He added that the Cook Government is dedicated to positioning WA as “the place for space,” a vision supported by significant investments aimed at diversifying the state’s economy.

Since 2018, the WA government has secured about $1 billion in investments and commitments for its nascent space industry. Currently, around 130 businesses are involved, marking a significant expansion as the state government strives to enhance the sector’s capacity. Ahead of the upcoming election, a pledge of $2 million has been made for a business case study to establish a rocket launch pad in WA, with funding allocated across two financial years as detailed in the June budget.

This strategic presence at IAC 2025 not only highlights Western Australia’s technological advancements but also opens doors for lasting relationships and collaboration with international peers. As Minister Dawson noted, this event represents a crucial opportunity to forge connections and exchange knowledge with global leaders in space exploration.

Authorities are optimistic that the outcomes from IAC 2025 will propel WA’s space sector to new heights, fostering innovation and economic growth. As developments unfold, stakeholders and enthusiasts alike are keenly watching for updates from this high-stakes conference.
