Jimmy Fallon has confirmed that he will maintain a non-political stance on The Tonight Show, despite the current pressures from political figures, including the administration of former President Donald Trump. In a recent appearance on CNBC‘s Squawk on the Street, the 51-year-old host emphasized his intention to focus on entertainment rather than engaging in political discourse.
Fallon stated, “Our show has never really been that political, you know. We hit both sides equally, and we try to make everybody laugh, and that’s really the way our show works.” He noted that the show’s monologues have remained consistent over the years, likening their approach to that of legendary host Johnny Carson.
He acknowledged the capabilities of his writing team, expressing confidence in their ability to create content that appeals to a wide audience. “I have great writers… clever, smart writers. And we’re just trying to make the best show we possibly can and entertain everybody,” Fallon added.
The context for Fallon’s remarks comes after the suspension and subsequent reinstatement of fellow late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel faced backlash for comments made regarding the murder of political commentator Charlie Kirk, prompting criticism from Trump. The former president took to Truth Social to express his views, stating, “Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Stephen Colbert, if that’s possible.”
In the wake of Kimmel’s suspension, Fallon addressed the situation during his opening monologue, humorously referring to a message from his father expressing concern over the status of his own show. “To be honest with you all, I don’t know what is going on. And no one does. But I do know Jimmy Kimmel and he is a decent, funny and loving guy, and I hope he comes back,” he remarked.
When Kimmel’s show returned to air, Fallon made light of the situation, emphasizing their shared first names. He told his audience, “If you’re tuning in to see what I’ll say about my suspension the last couple days, again, you’re watching the wrong Jimmy… Dad. The other Jimmy, Dad!”
Fallon’s commitment to steering clear of political commentary reflects a broader trend among late-night hosts navigating the complex dynamics of humor and politics in today’s media landscape. As The Tonight Show continues to entertain audiences, Fallon remains steadfast in his approach to comedy, prioritizing laughter over political debate.
