In a significant shift following his retirement, Callan Ward will continue his association with the GWS Giants as a part-time business and football advisor. The 35-year-old former captain concluded his AFL career this season after suffering an ACL injury during Round 12 against the Richmond Tigers, marking his 327th and final game.
Ward, a foundation player for the Giants, captained the team for eight years, leading them since their inception in 2012 until he stepped down in 2019. His career has been marked by both triumph and adversity, with the recent injury mirroring the one that deprived him of playing in the club’s only grand final in 2019, which resulted in a loss to Richmond.
Continuing Legacy at the Giants
Despite contemplating retirement at the end of the previous season, Ward chose to remain with the team for an additional year, motivated by the desire to secure a premiership. His commitment was evident even during his final game, where he delivered an inspiring address on crutches that helped rally the team to a narrow three-point victory over the Tigers.
As Ward transitions to his new role, he will rejoin his family in Victoria while maintaining his connection to the Giants. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute in a different capacity, stating, “I’m incredibly grateful to continue my journey with the Giants. This club means so much to me and my family, and I’m looking forward to giving back in a different way — helping develop the next generation of players while also supporting the work being done off the field to grow the club’s reach and impact.”
Impact and Responsibilities
Ward’s advisory position will encompass a broad range of responsibilities, including player development, recruiting, list management, and involvement with the AFLW program. He will also work on enhancing the club’s cultural initiatives, commercial partnerships, and key events. This announcement came from Dave Matthews, the club’s CEO, during the best and fairest awards ceremony.
“We’re thrilled that Callan will continue to have a presence at the club and help shape our future both on and off the field,” Matthews stated. “Callan has been central to the Giants’ story from day one — as an inaugural co-captain, a fierce competitor, and a cultural cornerstone.”
Ward concludes his illustrious career as the all-time games record-holder for the Giants, having played 267 games since joining the club. Drafted with pick No. 19 in 2007, he began his professional journey with the Western Bulldogs, where he played 60 games before moving to GWS.
As Ward embarks on this new chapter, he remains a beloved figure within the Giants community, poised to inspire the next generation of players while continuing to shape the club’s future. His transition underscores a lasting commitment to the organization that has defined his career.
