One of Australia’s largest music festivals, Knockout Outdoor, attracted a sold-out crowd of 60,000 attendees on Saturday, as the New South Wales (NSW) government launched its fourth pill testing trial. The festival, known as the “largest harder style festival in the southern hemisphere,” took place at Sydney Olympic Park and featured over 40 acts performing across three stages during a nine-hour event.
Festival-goers embraced the “Return of the Circuz” theme, with many sporting red noses and vibrant costumes. This year’s event marks a significant shift in safety protocols, as the NSW government confirmed last month that Knockout Outdoor would participate in a comprehensive 12-month pill testing trial. This initiative comes on the heels of tragic incidents from previous festivals, where a man in his twenties died and three others were hospitalized following last year’s event. Additionally, two fatalities occurred after the festival in October 2023.
Pill Testing: A Step Towards Harm Reduction
The introduction of pill testing at Knockout Outdoor is part of a broader initiative involving 12 festivals across the state, set to conclude in February 2024. Following the trial, an independent evaluation will assess its effectiveness in enhancing safety at large events. Organizers of the festival expressed their commitment to creating a secure environment for all participants.

Their partnership with NSW Health underscores a focus on community safety and well-being.
Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant emphasized the anonymity of the pill testing service, which aims to keep attendees safe. “This trial aims to inform individuals about substances, allowing them to avoid dangerous substances, discard high-risk drugs, make safer and more informed choices and potentially avoid serious health risks,” she said. “Our priority is to reduce harm and keep people safe.”

As the gates opened at 14:00, ravers from across Australia flocked to Sydney Olympic Park, eager to experience the vibrant atmosphere. The festival’s tickets sold out rapidly, illustrating the high demand for such events in the region.
