manly-ferries-to-suspend-service-for-essential-wharf-repairs

All large Manly ferries will be temporarily out of service for six weeks due to crucial repairs on Wharf two at Circular Quay. This closure, effective from October 20 to November 30, coincides with the onset of warmer weather, which typically attracts larger crowds during weekends. The repairs aim to enhance the safety and longevity of the wharf, which is vital for accommodating the larger vessels.

Wharf two, specifically constructed for large Freshwater-class ferries, will undergo maintenance on its berthing face and plates. As a result, the New South Wales (NSW) government has confirmed that no large Freshwater-class ferries will operate on the Circular Quay-Manly route during this period. Instead, smaller Emerald-class ferries and Manly Fast Ferry vessels will maintain service every ten minutes, operating from early morning until late evening, seven days a week.

The government has committed $71 million to refurbish three of the four large Manly ferries in the state’s fleet. The Narrabeen, which underwent repairs earlier this year at Sydney’s Garden Island, is scheduled to return to service once the maintenance on Wharf two is completed. Following this, its sister vessel, the Freshwater, will be readied for a major overhaul.

The Collaroy, the youngest of the Freshwater-class ferries, was retired two years ago due to high maintenance costs associated with its unique design. Currently, its future remains uncertain as efforts to find a new owner or community group to take responsibility for it have faced challenges.

Transport Minister John Graham expressed gratitude towards passengers for their understanding during the six-week closure. He advised families to consider adjusting their travel times, opting for earlier or later departures on weekends when larger ferries are unavailable. The government will closely monitor the situation during this period and is evaluating options to increase services on the busy route if necessary.

Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead, as there may be times when the Manly to Circular Quay route experiences higher than usual passenger numbers. The specific dates for the closure of Wharf two will be confirmed shortly, ensuring that passengers are kept informed as repairs proceed.
