UPDATE: A devastating incident in Gaza has left a family shattered after a hand grenade attack critically injured two children, leading to their tragic deaths. The incident occurred on a Saturday in 1971, highlighting the longstanding violence in the region.

The Aroyo family, who had immigrated from London to Israel in 1969, took a family drive to Gaza, a decision that would forever change their lives. Bob and Preeti Aroyo were enjoying a sunny afternoon with their children, Mark, aged 7, and Abigail, aged 4, when the unthinkable happened. As they drove with the windows down, a teenage boy stepped into the road. Bob slowed to avoid hitting him, but another youth hurled a hand grenade into the vehicle, targeting the children.

A panicked call to a local doctor, who was Bob’s friend, set off a frantic response. Without delay, emergency services were alerted, and Bob sought help from nearby locals, but none responded. Fortunately, an Israeli army jeep was in the vicinity, and soldiers quickly secured the area. A rescue helicopter transported the injured family to Be’er Sheva Hospital.

Tragically, both Mark and Abigail did not survive the attack. Preeti sustained severe injuries but miraculously retained her womb, allowing the family to rebuild their lives in the years that followed. They welcomed three more children, but the loss of Mark and Abigail remains a haunting reminder of that fateful day.

The Aroyo children are buried at the Mount of Olives, an ancient cemetery overlooking Jerusalem, a poignant site for a family forever marked by tragedy.

Philippa Jacks, a Sydney-based writer and former resident of Israel, reflects on this painful childhood memory. “That day in 1971 remains the most profound and painful memory of my childhood,” she states. Her daughter is named Abigail, a heartfelt homage to the sibling lost in the violence.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the ongoing tension and violence in the region, with families on both sides of the conflict bearing the weight of deep-seated pain and loss. As the world continues to watch the situation in Gaza, the human impact of these tragedies resonates louder than ever.
