BREAKING NEWS: Development Victoria (DV) has confirmed a dramatic shift in its housing project in Cairnlea, slashing over 300 homes from its initial proposal. This significant reduction comes as the agency revises its plan to transform the sites at 147a Cairnlea Drive and 26s Glenbrook Avenue, initially envisioned to host 840 dwellings.
In a statement released last month, DV’s acting executive general manager of housing, Nemesia Kennett, revealed that community feedback has played a pivotal role in reshaping the project. The revised plan will now offer around 500 homes of varying sizes, a move welcomed by many local residents. “We appreciate the strong community interest in this project and will continue to share updates with the local community as site remediation progresses,” Ms. Kennett stated.
Local advocate Graeme Blore expressed relief at the reduction in density, emphasizing the need for the community to manage traffic congestion effectively. “This is a positive step forward for a suburb already battling significant traffic issues,” he commented. Blore is also calling for an updated traffic management plan that considers the nearby COSTCO and other developments in the area.
The housing cut follows a Legislative Council petition initiated by community members advocating for diverse housing options and a multipurpose recreational facility. Blore noted, “Such facilities would greatly enhance the health, wellbeing, and social cohesion of our community.”
As the situation develops, residents are urged to stay informed about further updates regarding the housing project and its implications for the Cairnlea community. The focus now shifts to how this revised plan will address the pressing needs for housing and traffic management in the area.
