URGENT UPDATE: Toowoomba Region Councillor and former State Member for Toowoomba North, Kerry Shine, has submitted a radical proposal to the Queensland Redistribution Commission (QRC) that could dramatically reshape local electorates. This proposal aims to address projected population growth and redefine electoral boundaries to better represent the evolving community dynamics.
In a detailed submission to QRC Chairperson Judge Greg Koppenol, Shine highlights that approximately 4,684 people are expected to move to the region by 2041, with Highfields poised to become a significant growth area, reaching around 14,000 residents by 2032. This surge underscores the necessity for an electoral boundary realignment to ensure that Highfields is accurately represented as a thriving community.
Shine’s proposed adjustments include renaming Toowoomba North to “Highfields” and shifting its southern boundary from James Street to North Street. Additionally, Toowoomba South would be renamed “Toowoomba,” with its southern boundary realigned along Stenner Street, effectively transferring electors from low-growth areas to the Condamine electorate. This strategic change would consolidate the Toowoomba CBD within a single electorate, enhancing representation of the city’s cultural and economic heart.
“This proposal aims to foster a unified community identity centered around Highfields while ensuring that the Toowoomba CBD is effectively represented,” Shine stated. He emphasized that these boundary changes follow major roads, providing logical demarcations that align with existing transport and community patterns.
Shine’s submission has generated immediate attention, as the proposed changes could significantly impact local governance and representation. The QRC is expected to review the submission and consider the implications for the upcoming electoral cycle.
As the Toowoomba region continues to evolve, residents are urged to stay tuned for developments regarding this proposal. Community engagement and feedback will be crucial in shaping the future of local electorates.
