URGENT UPDATE: A waste tyre company in Craigieburn has just been fined $5,000 for serious licensing violations, highlighting the pressing need for regulatory compliance in the waste management sector. BMB Tyre Traders Pty Ltd and its director, Brian Fitzgerald, were ordered to pay the fines after failing to secure a license for storing over 11,000 tyres.
In a ruling delivered by the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on October 7, 2023, the company was found to be unlawfully storing 11,350 equivalent passenger unit tyres at their facility without the necessary operating license. This situation poses a significant risk to the environment, prompting immediate action from authorities.
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria reported that both BMB and Fitzgerald will also incur additional costs of $1,387 each, aimed at covering the expenses associated with the regulatory oversight. The EPA emphasized that the company failed to record and report essential transaction details on the EPA’s Waste Tracker system, a critical tool for managing waste responsibly.
“We cannot stress enough how waste tyres can pose a major environmental risk,” said Chloe Bernett, EPA’s north metropolitan regional manager. “It is vital that those involved in waste tyre storage, transportation, and disposal adhere to regulatory requirements. The use of the EPA Waste Tracker is not optional; it is essential for ensuring waste is managed from creation to disposal.”
Following these legal proceedings, BMB Tyre Traders has since taken steps to rectify the situation by obtaining the necessary permissions to store waste tyres legally. This development underscores the importance of adherence to environmental regulations, especially in industries dealing with potentially hazardous materials.
As the situation unfolds, industry stakeholders are urged to remain vigilant about compliance to prevent further environmental risks. The consequences of non-compliance can be severe, not just for businesses but for the community and environment at large.
