BREAKING: Braybrook College teacher Kat McLeod has just been named a finalist in a prestigious theatre educator scholarship program, recognizing her exceptional contributions to performing arts education across Australia and New Zealand. The scholarship, valued at $14,000, is sponsored by performing arts group travel specialists Travel Gang and will enable the winner to embark on a transformative journey across the USA in January 2024.
McLeod’s selection as a finalist highlights her impact as head of drama at Braybrook College since 2020. She teaches Year 10 and VCE drama, as well as VCE theatre studies and media for students from Years 7 to 10. The winner of the scholarship will participate in exclusive Broadway workshops in New York City, a Disney performing arts workshop in Los Angeles, and the Junior Theatre Festival in Atlanta, making this recognition even more significant for McLeod and her students.
“This is an incredible honor,” McLeod stated. “To be shortlisted among so many talented individuals making a difference in drama education is truly special. I’m grateful for the amazing teachers I had who inspired me, and I hope to continue my father’s legacy as a drama teacher.” Her father dedicated over 50 years to teaching drama, and McLeod is proud to carry on that tradition.
McLeod passionately engages her students by taking them to see theatre shows for the first time, remarking on the profound impact these experiences can have. “Seeing how that experience can change them and light a spark in them is magic,” she emphasized.
The winner of the scholarship will be announced in mid-October, heightening anticipation for McLeod and the drama community as a whole. Her nomination not only showcases her dedication but also reflects the vital role that arts education plays in shaping young lives.
