UPDATE: Australia has just secured a groundbreaking agreement to export blueberries to Vietnam, a deal poised to generate approximately $22 million over the next five years. The announcement was made today by Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Julie Collins, marking a significant boost for Australian blueberry producers.
This new market access, effective this week, is a remarkable opportunity for the Australian agricultural sector, set to enhance trade with a nation of over 100 million people. The deal is expected to yield $4 million in its first year alone, significantly contributing to Australia’s $500 million blueberry industry.
Minister Collins emphasized the importance of this agreement, stating,
“Australia’s hardworking, innovative blueberry producers should be proud of the fruit they grow, which is sought after all around the world. This agreement is a result of both the quality of our produce and the strength of our relationship with Vietnam.”
The groundwork for this two-way agreement began in 2022, highlighting the positive diplomatic relations between Australia and Vietnam. Not only does this agreement open doors for Australian blueberries, but it also introduces Vietnamese pomelos to Australian consumers, enriching the market on both sides.
In the 2024-25 period, the Albanese Labor Government recorded a total of 79 technical market access achievements across various products, supporting trade valued at $4 billion. This includes opening ten new markets and making significant improvements to existing access, all aimed at driving growth in the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector, which is projected to exceed $100 billion by 2025-26.
As this story develops, the impact of increased blueberry exports will not only benefit farmers but also consumers who will have access to quality produce. The government is committed to expanding opportunities for Australian farmers, ensuring their products can compete on the international stage.
