UPDATE: Maiden Gully YCW has unveiled its ambitious plan to join the Bendigo Football Netball League (BFNL) by 2027, presenting its vision to rival clubs last night. This pivotal announcement could reshape the competitive landscape of local football and netball, with the Eagles targeting a significant league upgrade from the Loddon Valley.
During a formal presentation at La Trobe University, the Eagles shared their strategy with BFNL clubs, board members, and representatives from AFL Central Victoria. This meeting follows the Eagles’ longstanding desire to elevate their status, a move they have eyed for several years.
“No decision has been made, and we’ll give our clubs time now to go back to their committees to discuss it,”
stated BFNL chair Carol McKinstry.
For the Eagles, the road to the BFNL is fraught with challenges, especially as they must navigate AFL Victoria’s transfer process. The club’s presentation highlighted its strengths, including junior participation rates and future plans across both football and netball. Shawn Filo and Angus Monfries, the dual coaches, have been pivotal in the club’s preparation for this potential leap.
Historically, the Eagles have struggled competitively, not having reached senior finals in the Loddon Valley league since 2019. Their recent records include finishes of 6th, 6th, 9th, 8th, and 6th, with a cumulative win-loss record of 23-53-1 over 75 games. However, their under-18 team has recently shined, clinching a premiership in its first season back, showcasing a promising future.
The netball side of the club has experienced fluctuations, with a drop in performance over the last two seasons after previously dominating the league. Nonetheless, Maiden Gully YCW boasts an impressive history, accumulating 28 premierships across all grades since 2010.
Looking ahead, the BFNL is expected to see transformative changes, with Maiden Gully YCW’s potential entry alongside Broadford, which is set to debut in the league next season, and the prospective involvement of Moama. Moama’s president, Scott Slater, confirmed interest in joining the league, particularly with the new 15-under netball competition launching next season.
The urgency for Maiden Gully YCW to achieve its goal is underscored by the challenges faced by the BFNL, which has seen a reduction in teams, losing Kyneton to the Riddell District league and facing operational struggles from Maryborough.
As preparations ramp up, Maiden Gully YCW must meet the June 30 deadline next year to ensure they are on track for the 2027 season. The ongoing discussions and evaluations from BFNL clubs will be critical in determining the Eagles’ fate.
Keep an eye on this developing story as Maiden Gully YCW aims to make waves in the local sports community, with potential impacts resonating throughout the BFNL landscape.
