The Rotary Club of Dandenong celebrated its remarkable history of community service on October 5, 2024, with a special dinner event at the Dandenong Club. The gathering marked 90 years since the club’s inception, bringing together members, families, and local officials to honor this significant milestone.
Club president John Ternel expressed his pride in the evening’s celebrations, emphasizing the importance of the club’s long-standing commitment to service. “It was truly inspiring—a proud moment that captures the very essence of Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self,” he stated. The event highlighted a rich history of fellowship and community involvement that has defined the Rotary Club in Dandenong.
Guests enjoyed a beautifully crafted celebration cake, a centerpiece that symbolized the occasion. Attendees also had the opportunity to view a historical bulletin documenting the club’s first meeting, held at the Royal Hotel in April 1935. Notably, Paul Harris, the founder and president emeritus of Rotary International, travelled from the United States to participate in that inaugural meeting.
The evening featured a heartfelt connection to the wider Rotary community, with Past District Governor Ken McDonald and his wife, Margaret, joining the celebration via FaceTime. Their reflections and congratulations added a personal touch to the festivities, bridging the gap between past and present members.
Local government representation was strong, with Greater Dandenong Deputy Mayor Sophie Tan and councillors Lana Formoso and Rhonda Garad attending to show their support for the Rotary Club’s contributions to the community. The presence of these officials underscored the importance of the club’s work in fostering community spirit and development over the decades.
As the Rotary Club of Dandenong looks to the future, the commitment to service remains as strong as ever. The celebration not only served as a reflection on the past but also as an inspiration for continued efforts in community engagement and support.
