Internationally recognized architectural firm Hassell has been appointed to create the concept design for the new Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Western Australia. This centre, located on Whadjuk Noongar Country and overlooking the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River), aims to celebrate and showcase Aboriginal culture through various forms of creative expression, including art, dance, language, song, and storytelling.

The Aboriginal Cultural Centre is envisioned as an immersive hub that will serve as a vital driver for cultural tourism. It is designed to connect local communities, artists, and creatives with visitors from both Australia and overseas. The project is backed by a funding commitment of $104 million, with equal contributions of $52 million from the Cook Government and the Federal Government.

Design and Collaboration Efforts

Hassell’s extensive experience, which includes projects like the award-winning Optus Stadium and the Laak Boorndap urban garden, positions the firm well to contribute to this culturally significant project. The design team will work closely with Aboriginal communities and key stakeholders. Their collaboration will ensure that the concept is rooted in First Nations knowledge, storytelling, and a strong connection to Country.

Premier Roger Cook emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “The appointment of Hassell is the next important milestone in delivering the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, a project of profound importance to Western Australia.” He noted that the firm’s expertise will play a crucial role in creating a world-class cultural landmark that respects and honors Aboriginal cultures.

The implementation of the centre will be overseen by co-Chairs Divina D’Anna, the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Kimberley, and Ben Wyatt, former Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. Their leadership represents a significant step forward for this iconic riverfront project.

Economic and Cultural Impact

Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk highlighted the potential of the project to enhance Western Australia’s cultural landscape. She remarked, “This project provides significant opportunities for Aboriginal businesses, creative practitioners, and the tourism industry through live events, festivals, and cultural experiences.”

The Cook Government remains committed to fostering a robust and sustainable future for creative industries, artists, and organizations throughout the state. This initiative aims to enrich the cultural and economic fabric of Western Australia, ensuring that local talent is showcased on a global platform.

The development of the Aboriginal Cultural Centre marks a pivotal moment in Western Australia’s commitment to acknowledging and celebrating its rich Indigenous heritage. As the project progresses, it will undoubtedly play a crucial role in connecting people to the diverse narratives and traditions of Aboriginal culture.
