Huge number of drivers caught speeding through a school zone in Peppermint Grove
URGENT UPDATE: A new survey from the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) has just revealed alarming dangers for children in school zones across West Australia. As students return to school, drivers are confronting severe congestion, illegal parking, and dangerous distractions—heightening risks for young pedestrians.
The RAC school traffic survey, which gathered insights from 726 respondents, shows that nearly 50 percent of drivers experience heavy congestion at school drop-off and pick-up times on a daily basis. This traffic chaos is compounded by illegal parking, reported by almost 50 percent of participants, along with 37 percent witnessing impatience among drivers and 36 percent observing pedestrians distracted by mobile phones.
In addition to these pressing concerns, respondents indicated unsafe behaviors such as failing to use indicators, tailgating, and parking too closely to other vehicles. Shockingly, one-third of drivers noted witnessing speeding in school zones every day.
Will Golsby, RAC’s external relations general manager, emphasizes the critical need for vigilance among all road users during these peak traffic times. “School traffic is busy and often chaotic, so we’re urging parents and caregivers to follow the rules, drive at the speed limit, be courteous to other drivers and watch out for pedestrians,” he stated.
Golsby further highlighted the importance of considering alternative transportation options, such as walking, cycling, or using public transport, to alleviate the congestion and frustration during school hours. In an encouraging development, the RAC has welcomed the WA Government’s decision to provide free public transport for students, which aims to ease traffic burdens and promote active travel.
This survey acts as a wake-up call for parents, guardians, and community members to take immediate action in ensuring the safety of children around schools. As West Australians prepare for the return to school, officials stress the urgency of adhering to traffic rules to protect young lives.
Stay tuned for further updates as authorities work to implement safer infrastructure and promote better traffic practices in school zones. The safety of our children depends on it.
