UPDATE: A new Gallipoli oak tree was urgently planted at the Anzac Memorial Garden at Keilor Library to honor locals who lost their lives in World War I. The Brimbank Council confirmed this significant tribute was completed last month, replacing a previous tree planted in 2018 for the Anzac Centenary, which was removed for rehabilitation.

Keilor Historical Society Vice President Susan Jennison emphasized the tree’s importance, stating, “It represents such an important element of Australia and New Zealand’s history.” The oak serves not only as a memorial but also as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the community during the war. Jennison highlighted that the names of local soldiers and nurses are inscribed on the board in the Old Shire Hall, reinforcing the tree’s role in honoring their memories.

Brimbank Mayor Cr Thuy Dang noted the tree is intended to stand as a tribute for generations. “It’s another way we can ensure Brimbank continues to remember the sacrifices made by those Australians who served in WWI,” she stated. The council is also committed to replanting the original oak tree once it is healthy again, demonstrating their dedication to preserving local history.

The Gallipoli oak, known for its distinctive spiny-serrated leaves and acorns, thrives in the ridges and valleys of the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkiye. This planting not only commemorates the past but also fosters community engagement, providing a space for reflection and education. Officials encourage residents to visit the Anzac Memorial Garden to pay their respects and learn more about Keilor’s historical significance.

As the community gathers around this new symbol of remembrance, the legacy of those who served will continue to resonate, reminding all of the enduring impact of their sacrifices. This initiative is part of Brimbank Council’s broader efforts to engage the community in local history and ensure that the stories of their heroes are not forgotten.
